Guide to Beginning Hackers and Phreakers
in the world of ESS.

***************************************************************************
Tips For The Would-Be Hacker
Unfortunately, many Novice phreaks and hackers have been mislead by
old information into believing that there are boxes that will stop
traces, and mask blue boxing. At one time this was true, but as
with anything, time marches on, and things become obsolete
Since I'm not aware of any boxes that currently work, I have only
have one suggestion, don't use your own line. There are three
effective ways to do this: Using a laptop at a payphone for a short
time, using a high power cordless phone on a hosts line, or, using a
modded cellular phone or ham radio equipment to use another persons
pin number, for free calls.
1. Using a cordless phone or other low level transmitter so that you can use
Someone else's phone line to either use box tones or charge the
bill to a private parties line.
By using either a high power cordless phone, or, a high power full
duplex transmitter, you can hook up to almost any phone line within a
two mile radius so you can make free phone calls all over the world,
while you sit at home safe from being traced or flagged for using box
tones. You can use this method anywhere within a two mile distance
from your home, just as long as you have easy access to a phone
control box. My personal favorite place is old shopping centers, but
there are other places, so be creative.
Take this into consideration: In a worn down part of town,
there is a beat up shopping center. There are no lights, no cars,
no costumers, nothing but a pay phone and some private lines for
the proprietors. Your next move is to look for a telephone access box.
And if the shopping center is as run down and old as I recommend , you
will find that it isn't very secure. I have found that most are enclosed in
plywood closets in the back that uses nothing more than a pad lock
that you can get rid of by removing three screws. Once you get it
open, climb in if you can and close the door. Turn on your flashlight
and look for a phone box and 120volt plug or line. If the phone box
is there, take a picture of the set up and go home and get it
developed. If it isn't there, you choose the wrong door and must
repeat the process till find the right one. Once your home, look at
the picture and determine what you need to do the dirty deed.
Take these things into consideration when examining the photo:
Is there a modular plug?
If so, all you need is a line spliter with a fax switch(that way when you
pick up the line, the other side can't hear what's going on)
If not, you need to make a line that has alligator clips at one end, and a
modular plug at the other.
Is there a 120volt plug any where near to box?
If so, no problem!
If not, you got a problem with a couple of solutions.
1. You can find a new place, which I recommend if you don't feel comfortable
with the following.
2. Use your electrical know how, to tap into a direct line going to any
electrical appliance. You can accomplish this by cutting an extension cord
and connecting the loose wire to the buildings electrical line with wire nuts.
If you don't know much about electricity just remember to connect the same
colored wires together.
3. Buy a full duplex, high power, telephone transmitter, that runs on
batteries. You can buy one from one of the many companies that advertise in
Nuts and Volts magazine. Though a high quality one that can handle modem
transmitions can be quite costly, so it might not be worth it.So do some
research before you buy.
3.And lastly, look for a hiding place for you equipment.
Now is the time to prepare.
Equipment you'll need:
High power cordless phone (900mhz/minimum) or a high power full duplex
transmitter.
Hand set charger (home made or bought)
Hand set modem coupler (or a home made modification)
120 volt 3 prong extension cord (needed only some of the time)
Latex gloves (never touch any of the equipment without them on)
Modular plug spliter or a phone line with alligator clips on one side and a
modular on the other.
A Phillips or a flathead screwdriver.(wire clippers if you need them.)
Fax switch
Now comes the moment of truth and danger, time to install. If you planned
well you should be able to get in and out within minutes. So within those few
minutes you should have a look out who can inform you of any problem that may
arise by dropping a hand full of change or something to that effect. But, even
if you are caught by, lets say by a cop, don't panic. The chances are the cop
won't have any idea of what your trying to do. So give him a or her a bull shit
story like "I got in an argument with my parents and I was looking for a safe
place to sleep." You might want to bring along a sleeping bag. But lets face
it: What are your chances of being caught? little to none. After you've
finished, go home and have fun. All of the danger is over and now is the time
to reap the benefits.
Here are some of the things to think about.
If you are making toll calls, do not leave the base in after the 20th of that
month.(Most phone bills show up about that time, and when the owner gets two
grand worth of bills, I think he will be more than a little suspicious)
I recommend using box tones and carding, as I said before charging to the
hosts line means moving the base place to place periodically. It's sketchy
enough doing it once, let alone every 20 days.
Do not tap into a major telephone company(Pac Tel, GTE, Bell) pay phone for
these reasons: It's hard to connect, due to the fact that they have private
lines that will not be run thru the back closet spaces. And if you use red
box tones you always have to put in at least one coin in it, to complete the
circuit that tells the system you paid.
If your hooked up to a business, use the line only during its hours of
non-operation.
Do not leave the cordless on accidently, The batteries could last for more
than 12 hours, meaning the next day the lines would be down, the owner calls
the phone company, the phone company finds the base, the FCC triangulates on
the handset, your busted.
Don't brag!
Think like a criminal, cause if your caught you'll be treated like one.
Well, I think I covered It all. I chose this method, as the first to cover,
because it is both the simplest and cheapest method of them all. I hope it
got you thinking.
Next time I write it should be on the art of note book phreaking and hacking
And after that and some research, the art of cellular fraud.(expensive).
By the way remember when it comes to advice, more is better. So talk to some
people who know what there doing.
And one last note: Always use cash when you buy any equipment. Do not send
in the registration card (both can be traced back to you, know what I mean?)
